Microsoft explains how you can avoid the bug that prevents you from installing updates on Windows 10 computers

One of the flaws that most often exasperate users is the related to updates and the impossibility of, sometimes, install them. This is what happens to some users having trouble installing a _update_ as a result of installing the cumulative updates for May 25, 2021 and June 21, 2021. A problem recognized by Microsoft and which has already been remedied.

The bugs were present after installing patches KB5003214 and B5003690, corresponding to the cumulative updates of May 25, 2021 and June 2021. Those affected cannot install the latest cumulative updates for Windows 10, encountering the error message “PSFX_E_MATCHING_BINARY_MISSING” in the process. And this is the solution offered by Microsoft.

Updates can be received … and also installed

Windows

From the support page offer a tutorial for those who use Windows 10 on Windows 10 versions 21H1, 20H2 and 2004. According to Microsoft, these steps solve the problem that existed until now and that, for example, has prevented those affected from installing the latest patches released.

This problem occurs on devices that have been automatically removed to remove stale resource records. When a system is cleaned up, the most recently installed Cumulative Update (LCU) is marked as permanent and the oldest components are removed from the system. After cleanup is complete and a device is in this state, you cannot uninstall KB5003214 or KB5003690, and you cannot install LCU in the future.

To correct the problem, Microsoft has detailed a series of steps that must be taken and that allow users to perform a manual update using the CMD tool. These are the steps to follow:

  • Open a window of the command prompt by typing “cmd” or “command prompt” in the search box.

Solution

  • To select “Execute as an administrator”.
  • You will then generate the necessary registry key value for a device to be the target of an in-place upgrade.

  • At the command prompt, you have to write the following order.

Reg.exe Add HKLM SOFTWARE Microsoft Windows CurrentVersion / v AllowInplaceUpgrade / t REG_DWORD / f / d 1

  • Press the “Enter” key.

According to Microsoft, “This registry value will be removed once the local update is complete. The local update may take up to 48 hours to be delivered to the device.”. When the update is available, the device will be updated to a clean version of the operating system equal to the one you are using, which will also include the latest monthly security quality update. After the update in place, the device will be able to receive new updates normally.

What’s more warn that in the case of ARM64 devices, an in-place update will only succeed if KB5005932 has already been installed. To verify that the KB5005932 patch is installed, go to “Settings”, “Windows Update”, “Update history” and “Other updates”. If the ARM64 machine does not have the KB5005932 patch installed, select “Check for updates” on the Windows Update settings page to start a scan.
