Google Chrome will allow you to open several different windows from Android 12

From Android Nougat, it is possible open two pages at once with Google Chrome taking advantage of Android’s split screen feature. Google is working on an even more powerful improvement, by which you can open multiple Google Chrome windows on Android.

At the moment the possibility of opening several instances of Google Chrome is available in the versions Dev and Canary from Google Chrome under Android 12, although it is foreseeable that it will end up reaching the official version. With this novelty, it will be possible to open until five different instances of Google Chrome, each of them appearing in the recent view.

Best multitasking for Google Chrome

Google is working on boosting the productivity of Google Chrome, allowing you open different windows, similar to how it happens on the desktop. This is something that in a way can be done from Android Nougat, but in a very limited way.

The main difference is that the option Move to another window, already present for a few years when you use the Android split screen, just move the current tab. You can have two web pages open at the same time, but one of them is simply a specific tab: you cannot open more tabs on it.

This changes with the new multi-instance mode, which can already be tested on Android 12 with the development versions of Google Chrome, upon activation of the Chrome Flag #instance-switcher. With this mode active, the option appears in the Google Chrome menu New window in the context menu, as long as the split screen is active.

Manage

This creates another standalone copy of Google Chrome, which can have as many tabs open as you want and which appears separately in the Recent view of Android, even if you have already closed the split screen mode.

A basic management of these open windows is also included in the contextual menu of Google Chrome. With Manage windows you can view and close open windows, while with Move to another window you can send the current tab to another instance of Google Chrome. At the moment, it is possible to create up to five instances of Google Chrome.
