MediaTek is a well-known name for users in Spain. The brand’s processors are present in many phones that are launched in Spain, more and more in fact. 2020 was a year of great importance for the manufacturer chipmaker, which finally managed to overtake Qualcomm and took the first position in the market.
Already in the last months of last year this trend could be seen, although the total figures for 2020 were missing. MediaTek manages for the first time in its history to surpass Qualcomm and its Snapdragon processors. They thus become the first supplier of chips for mobile phones.
Qualcomm has been overtaken: who’s selling the most processors in 2020The latest analysis from CounterPoint Research reveals the processor market in 2020, and during the last quarter Qualcomm has lost its leadership.
MediaTek outperforms Qualcomm
MediaTek’s presence in the market has increased and we currently find phones in all ranges with the brand’s processors. This resulted in the manufacturer in 2020 ship 351.8 million processors, a growth of 47.8% year-on-year. These figures have helped it to be crowned the first processor vendor for the first time, thus breaking Qualcomm’s dominance.
Brands like Xiaomi or Samsung have helped to the advancement of this processor manufacturer. Xiaomi shipped 63.7 million phones using MediaTek processors, while Samsung shipped 43.3 million, a whopping 254.5% increase. The South Korean firm thus breaks with its tradition of using only Exynos or Qualcomm Snapdragon.
Another brand that is increasing its demand for processors is Huawei, which due to the United States veto for a long time collaborates with the chipmaker on some models. Honor is also collaborating with them, having already signed an agreement and launching phones like the Honor V40 Lite with a Dimensity 700U processor. In fact, these two brands are expected to use more processors from the Helio and Dimensity ranges this year in their phones.
Omnia analysts, responsible for these figures on the processor market, consider that the success of MediaTek in 2020 is also due to an increase in sales of phones in the mid-range and low-range, two segments where the manufacturer has a greater presence and where there has been a great advance this year.
The entry MediaTek surpasses Qualcomm: it is already the first mobile chip provider to appear first in The Free Android.
